Senior Financial Controller

THE ROLE OVERVIEW

The Senior Financial Controller will work closely with finance colleagues and cross-functional stakeholders across development, construction and asset management. The role will provide meaningful insight into company and project performance, support reporting requirements, and contribute to the continuous improvement of finance processes and systems.

TASKS

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual management reporting, including variance analysis, commentary and recommendations for senior stakeholders.

  • Support the budgeting, forecasting and long-term planning process, ensuring financial information is accurate, consistent and delivered on time.

  • Monitor company and project performance, working closely with development, construction and operational teams to understand costs, risks and key financial drivers.

  • Support project controlling activities, including cost tracking, cash-flow forecasting, committed-cost analysis and investment performance monitoring.

  • Maintain and improve financial controls, reporting processes and data quality across the finance function.

  • Support statutory reporting, audit processes, tax and VAT requirements in cooperation with internal and external advisers.

  • Prepare financial information for management, board, investor and lender reporting.

  • Contribute to the development of scalable reporting tools, finance systems and efficient ways of working.

PROFILE

Qualification and Professional Experience

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a comparable qualification, with relevant professional experience in controlling or financial reporting.

  • Proven experience in a Senior Financial Controller, Financial Controller, Management Accountant or similar role.

  • Mandatory experience in a project-based environment, ideally within construction, infrastructure, renewable energy, real assets or a comparable sector.

  • Strong understanding of management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and financial controls.

  • Experience with project cost controlling, project accounting or financial monitoring of capital-intensive projects.

  • Based within commutable distance of Karlsruhe and able to work from the Karlsruhe office at least three days per week.

IT and analytical skills

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, in particular:

    • Pivot tables

    • Power Query

    • Complex formulas and data analysis

    • Data modelling.

  • Excellent knowledge of Power BI, in particular:

    • Creation of interactive dashboards and reports

    • Data modelling and knowledge of DAX

    • Connecting and integrating various data sources

    • Automation and further development of reporting processes.

  • Confidence using ERP systems.

Treasury, Liquidity and Working Capital Management

  • Substantial experience in liquidity management and cash-flow planning.

  • Several years’ experience in managing and optimising working capital (receivables, payables and, ideally, project-related balances and advance payments).

  • Experience in establishing and further developing cash management and treasury processes within international corporate structures.

  • Knowledge of the financing of multinational corporate structures, in particular:

    • Intercompany financing

    • Draw-down processes from credit and financing facilities

    • Cash pooling

    • Intra-group loans

    • Corporate law, tax and financial requirements of international financing structures

    • Experience in the management of banks, financing and treasury processes is desirable, but not an essential requirement.

Personal skills

  • An analytical, structured, detail-oriented and solution-oriented approach to work.

  • A strong aptitude for numbers, sound commercial judgement and a thorough understanding of business contexts and financial processes.

  • A proactive, hands-on approach, with the ability to analyse, optimise and establish processes in a sustainable manner.

  • Confident in analysing complex financial data and translating it into clear, practical insight for non-finance stakeholders.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills when dealing with management, banks, auditors and international subsidiaries.

  • Ability to work independently, a strong sense of responsibility and an entrepreneurial mindset.

  • Ability to work well in a team and to collaborate across departments in an international environment.

  • Fluent German and English communication skills, both written and spoken.
